Why does HPCSA registration matter in mental health?
People offering mental health support can have different qualifications, professional roles and scopes of practice. Understanding a practitioner’s registration helps you make an informed choice about your care.
What is the HPCSA?
The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) is a statutory body established under the Health Professions Act 56 of 1974. It regulates the health professions within its remit, including psychology, to protect the public and guide the professions.
- Regulates education, training and professional registration.
- Sets standards for ethics and professional conduct.
- Investigates complaints about registered practitioners and takes disciplinary action where appropriate.
What does registration mean?
Registration authorises a practitioner to practise within their registered profession and category. Requirements vary by profession and category.
Qualified and competent
Practitioners must meet the education and training requirements for their registration category and work within their competence.
Ethical and accountable
Registered practitioners are bound by professional and ethical rules. Members of the public can raise concerns about professional conduct with the HPCSA.
Scope of practice
Practitioners must work within their professional scope, training and experience, and refer where a different level of care is needed. Different mental health professionals have different roles; registration does not give every practitioner authority to diagnose or prescribe medication.
Ongoing professional development
Continuing professional development supports the maintenance of professional knowledge and skills.
How does the HPCSA help protect you?
Professional standards, ethical rules and a complaints process provide safeguards and accountability. You can check a practitioner’s registration rather than relying only on a title or advertisement.
Your mental health deserves safe care
Before choosing a practitioner, ask:
- Are they registered with the relevant professional body?
- Are they working within their scope and competence?
- Is the service suitable for your needs, and will they refer you when appropriate?
This information is for educational purposes and highlights the role of HPCSA registration in mental health care. It is not intended to discriminate against non-HPCSA-registered practitioners who work within their own lawful scopes and expertise.
